Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951), the great maestro of Indian visual arts stands almost alone in his effort to indoctrinate the nation to attain our identity. Properly taught and trained under western artists Abanindranath advanced well ahead to bring a radical change in our outlook to accept or look into oriental tradition and continuity. It is he who took it as mission to shape our art aesthetic. An annual award in memory of Abanindranath Tagore had been introduced by the Government of West Bengal and conferred on an artist for lifelong and overall contribution in the field of visual arts.
Binod Behari Mukhopadhyay (1904-1980) Born at Behala, the-then suburb of Kolkata, Benode Behari Mukhopadhyay was taught at Santiniketan and became beloved protégé of Nandalal Bose. Advancing away from Bengal School Benode Behari mastered in calligraphic pictogram style of far eastern art traditions. His memory for the forms of landscape, linocuts, printmaking served him miraculously as he lost his eyesight completely in the year 1957. He began teaching art history and continued painting even after that grave misfortune. An annual award in memory of Benode Behari Mukhopadhyay had been introduced by the Government of West Bengal and conferred on an artist for lifelong and overall contribution encompassing both of creativity and thought.
Ramkinkar Baij (1906-1980) Born and brought up at rural Bengal of Bankura District, Ramkinkar Baij was introduced to Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan thereafter other masters of the Bengal School. He got in-born capabilities in the area Sculpture. A self-taught artist in the beginning he started his career as a painter in the oriental style but very soon became preoccupied with the art-movements that took place in the West in the beginning of the Twentieth Century. Ramkinkar taught Sculpture at Santiniketan where he spent the rest of his life. An annual award in memory of Ramkinkar Baij had been introduced by the Government of West Bengal and conferred every year on an artist for lifelong and overall contribution in the field of Sculpture.
