Abanindra Puroskar

Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951), the great maestro of Indian visual arts stands almost alone in his effort to indoctrinate the nation to attain our identity. Properly taught and trained under western artists Abanindranath advanced well ahead to bring a radical change in our outlook to accept or look into oriental tradition and continuity. It is he who took it as mission to shape our art aesthetic. An annual award in memory of Abanindranath Tagore had been introduced by the Government of West Bengal and conferred on an artist for lifelong and overall contribution in the field of visual arts.
